The design of this hotdog stand paradoxically makes the small space smaller in order to produce the effect of a larger space. The ceiling slopes down 2' while the floor slopes up 6" from the storefront creating a forced perspective. The sloping surfaces converge at the sales counter to imply depth and continuity within a space only twice as long as it is wide. The interior surface is strips of steel, whose widths decrease from 6" to 2". The project formalizes the literal sequence of take-out, leading the customer from the sidewalk to the grill, to the cash register, eating counter and back to the sidewalk. Located at the division between coming in and going out, a laminated bamboo plywood counter cantilevers 12' from the outside through the glass storefront. Inside, the counter floats within the space and provides a horizontal datum against which to read the slope of the floor and ceiling. The side walls are sealed concrete panels, whose rough quality is in direct contrast to the crisp steel wrapper and bamboo counter.
