The existing space was a combination of six different rooms spread over three properties. Each room had
its own floor level and ceiling height, which was both the problem of the space and its quality. A
horizontal level line unifies the separate spaces and highlights the unique volumes of
each room. The datum line, made from 1/4" thick stainless
steel, cuts through the whole restaurant providing a continuous visual reference. The datum marks or
transforms into the significant components of the design: the joint between the floor material and
the ceiling material, the top of the continuous felt banquette, the bar shelving, the service
station, and the collective sink.
