The Van Alen Institute requested a design that would produce a coherent and legible organization of space
while allowing flexibility between the different programs. Central to the project was a need to unify and
demarcate the private office zone and the public gallery area and to provide a room for exhibition and
lectures. Following extensive cleaning and demolition, a series of tactical insertions, each serving multiple
functions, were installed.
In response to a modest budget, LTL worked as architect, general contractor and fabricator, custom
designing furniture and walls to maximize the possible functional configurations and operation of the space
