ROGER'S ADDITION
Private Residence
Akron, OH
In progress
2500 sq. ft.
This addition to a modestly-scaled single family home in the Midwest comprising a guest bedroom, shop/office and gallery - responds to the unique pressures of its site - an otherwise typical residential lot distinguished by a dramatic ravine and densely wooded with mature trees. Nearly doubling the size of the existing small residence, the form of the new structure negotiates four distinct directional pressures: a steeply rising topography and access to the adjacent high ground to the west, automotive entry to the north, the connection to the main house to the east and the desire to engage the dramatic ravine views to the south, simultaneously minimizing impact on the several large specimen trees that occupy the site. The resulting spatial logic derives from weaving the space of the building within this densely forested landscape.
